Pete Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award 2011 for the South West!!!
BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award for the South West

Congratulations to Pete for winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award 2011. David Passmore from BBC Points West visited the judo club on Saturday morning (19/11/11) to film Pete in action teaching the children. Pete knew he had been nominated for the award and was one of the main contenders but the look of suprize on his face at actually being awarded the prize for the whole of the South West was a picture to behold!!!

Pete will now be put forward for the National prize; so we may even see him on the BBC Sport Personality of the Year show on the 22nd December!! Fingers crossed for the next few weeks please.

I'm sure Pete won't mind me thanking, on his behalf, all the kind words of support from the parents present and particularly to Lisa & Ivor, Alex and Felicity for all their hard work in highlighting to the award committee why Pete is such a deserved recipient of this award.

NEWS PAPER REPORT:

Twelve young fighters from the Bath Judo Club Squad attended the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with six gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze.

The first competitor to fight was Ethan Hawtin who won all his fights except for the final one to take the silver medal, his club mate Yuui Heya who was in the opposite pool won all his fights except for the one against the gold medal winner to take the bronze medal, this category the under 30 kilo’s had an entry of fourteen fighters.

The next group the under 35 kilo’s was a hotly contested group but Rory Padkin won every contest to take the gold medal, club mate Jonny Phillips who was on his first attendance at an external championship had two contests in which he gave a very good account of his contest ability but did not get enough points to go through to the next round.

The under 40 kilo group saw twins Ben and Joe Hansard win every fight with the maximum score. They then met in the final which went to full time with Joe getting the decision by the smallest of margins to win the gold while brother Ben took the silver medal.

In the under 45 kilo class Tim Clark and Jesse Armstrong won all their contests in a dominating style to reach the final where Tim managed to win a decision over Jesse to take the gold medal leaving the silver for club mate Jesse.

In the under 50 kilo group which again was well supported Jamie Padkin produced his best ever judo skills to completely dominate the group and win the gold medal, his club mate Aidon Higgins won some of his contests with superb skills but then lost out to Jamie. Aidon was awarded a higher grade for his contesting and super skills.

The hardest contest group of the day was the under 55 kilo group where Elliott Hawtin won his first contest in under 10 seconds. His next four fights only lasted about 30 seconds each but in the final he was pitted against a provisional black belt from Devon. Elliott threw him after about three minutes of hard fighting but the referee called a halt to the contest and disallowed the score. Elliott then pulled out all of his skills and went on to win the contest by a large decision.

In the under 90 kilo class Rhys Lansdown fought extremely well and earned himself a gold medal.

Three fighters from the Bath Judo Club attended the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with one gold medal, one silver medal and one bronze medal. The first competitor to fight was James Allard who was in a group of players in the Heavy weight class. His first three fights did not go the distance as he completely dominated the contests and won with the maximum score before the final contest time. He then went through to the final where he came up against a player who had a vast amount of experience but James managed to take control of this contest and amassed three minor scores before finishing the contest with an ippon the maximum score in judo.

The next contestant to fight was Ivor Hawtin who in his first ever contest lost the first of his fights after first scoring against his opponent on two occasions , but due to lack of contest experience he was then beaten by a hold down. Ivor then learnt from his previous fight and threw his next three opponents to take a place on the rostrum and the bronze medal in the middle weight group.

Our final player was Callum Stevenson who was in the 16 to 18 year olds light weight group and was giving all his opponents an advantage due to the fact that they were much heavier than he was. He fought extremely well and finished in the silver medal position. This was Callum’s first outing into the adult stages of judo competition as he was still a junior player in October of this year.

The Bushido national championships were held at the High Wycombe Judo centre on Sunday October 3rd. Clubs from many parts of the Country sent players to compete in the various weight categories. Two of the pupils from the Kingswood Preparatory school judo club entered. Ethan Hawtin decided he wanted to contest but it meant that he had to fight against boys much larger than himself, he had some excellent contests and threw one boy who was head and shoulders above him with an ankle sweeping throw, he was awarded a runners up medal for his ability and courage.

Rory Padkin won every one of his contests to take the Gold medal in the 30 kilo class. Yuui Heya a member of the Bath team also won a runners up medal for his efforts in his weight group. Bath again took Gold in the under 45kilo group with Max Harrison winning every fight with the maximum score, club mate Tim Clark only lost one fight all day and this was to Max Harrison and so Tim took the bronze medal.

The under 50 kilo group was dominated by the Bath judo club who won all the medals in this class, Jamie Padkin won the bronze, Elliott Hawtin the silver and Ruben Harris the gold. Ruben never took more that 20 seconds to beat each of his opponents. Rhys Lansdown won the silver medal in the heavy weight section, he was thrown on to his back in his first fight but then came back to win the rest of his contests and take the medal. High Wycombe '08

Here's the report that was sent into Bath Chronicle:

Four young fighters from the Bath Judo Club attended the Bushido national championships held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre and returned with four gold medals and one silver medal. The first competitor to fight was Jordan Owen who was in a group of twelve players. His first three fights did not go the distance as he completely dominated the contests and won with the maximum score before the final contest time. He then went through to the final where he came up against a player who had a vast amount of experience but Jordan managed to take control of this contest and amassed three minor scores which he held onto until the final contest time to win the gold medal in the under 45 kilo class. The next contestant to fight was Connor Miller who completely overwhelmed all the players in the under 55kilo group, he threw his first three competitors with dynamic throws within about 25 seconds of the contest to go through to the final where he again took complete control and won this fight for the Gold medal in the first minute of the contest. Our final male player was Oliver Hawthorne who was in the under 70 kilo group and was giving all his opponents an advantage due to the fact that they were much heavier than he was, he won his first contest with a well executed throw but then lost his next contest by a hold down where his opponent managed to pin him to the mat for 25 seconds, In his third contest the opponent was thrown for an ippon which is the maximum score and in his final contest Oliver won by throwing his opponent for a small score and then pinning him down for the winning decision and the Silver medal.

Our last competitor of the day was Natasha Hawes, who, not to be out done by the other fighters from her club, threw all her opposition with stunning techniques which brought a number of the spectators to their feet to cheer her as she took the Gold medal in her weight group. She also contested the weight group above her own where she again proved her superiority by winning all her contests to win another Gold medal.
